TASKING, emWARE ALLIANCE INTEGRATES DEVELOPMENT TOOLS WITH DEVICE INTER-NETWORKING

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS '99 Nuremberg, Germany — TASKING, Inc., and emWare, Inc., (Salt Lake City, Utah) have entered into a partnership to include emWare's EMIT embedded device networking software and TASKING's development tools for faster and easier development of embedded Internet solutions.

"Our tools, coupled with EMIT software, provide a complete development environment in support of a variety of 8- and 16-bit MCUs, making it easier to create and complete device networking solutions with Internet access for virtually any electronic device," said Laura Horn, TASKING director of product marketing.

TASKING has traditionally supported a wide range of 8- and 16-bit MCUs including Intel's 8051/151/251, Siemens' C166, Philips' XA-S3 and Mitsubishi's M16C core. All these toolsets consist of optimizing C/C++/EC++ compilers, the CrossView Pro debugger and off-the-shelf embedded software libraries integrated into the company's Embedded Development Environment, 'EDE'.

"Our focus on delivering networking technology to new and existing devices, particularly those with 8- and 16-bit MCUs, allows developers to use our products to implement full-featured device networks today," said Christopher Sontag, chief technology officer and co-founder of emWare. "The combination of our two technologies will help move embedded device networking from something we talk about to something that happens."

EMIT software is based on a distributed device networking architecture. At the core of this architecture is a micro Web server — the industry's smallest — that uses as little as 1Kb of memory at the device. Standard Internet technologies, such as Java, HTTP and a Web browser interface are used to access, control and monitor devices through emGateway, the communication link between IP networks and lightweight networks, such as I2C, RS485, CAN, RF.

The user interface is a standard Web browser in many applications, using industry standard browser technology to reduce client side development. The interface can operate on a remote Web browser, a directly connected laptop, or even a handheld PDA. Where a user interface is not necessary, it can connect directly to an application or database. EMIT's open, distributed network solution provides a complete software toolkit for networking embedded devices.
