TASKING v2.0 POWERPC TOOLS DELIVER EMBEDDED EXCELLENCE

ESS Nuremberg — With release v2.0, TASKING, Inc., has extended its PowerPC software development tools for the Motorola and IBM PowerPC families. Embedded C++(EC++) support, New optimizations, Extended RTOS aware debugging and on-chip debugging are all designed to provide More integration, Better optimization and Expanded debugging for its customers.

"The key to the PowerPC tools is the TASKING EDE, our Embedded Development Environment", says Laura Horn, TASKING PowerPC Product Marketing Manager. " EDE brings together all the tools necessary for a customer to successfully complete their project on time. We have taken care of the integration work".

TASKING PowerPC tools now support EC++, which addresses the issue of C++ overhead. An EDE menu enables the user to omit those C++ features that increase code size, impair runtime efficiency and are not essential for most embedded applications.

New compiler optimizations have been added as a result of customer input. Symbolic Register Access Libraries have been added to provide easy access to the PowerPC register set at the C/C++/EC++ language level. Each library is re-entrant which removes the need for customers to be concerned with conflicts between multiple threads and tasks because they are resolved automatically.

One of the most powerful features of the PPC Solution is the CrossView Pro Debugger. It is typically during the debugging session where the most time can be saved. CrossView Pro has expanded its RTOS Aware Debugging Module so that it can be used with any real-time operating system including those developed in-house. The RADM (RTOS Aware Debugging Module) enables the user to use CrossView Pro to examine how tasks behave and interact and observe the behavior of intertask communication, synchronization mechanisms and interrupt service routines.

CrossView Pro Debugger provides comprehensive yet easy-to-use capabilities to quickly find simple and elusive bugs. CrossView Pro helps facilitate the debugging phase by providing access to all capabilities via a GUI so customers do not need to use or learn text commands. It supports multiple execution environments so the right debugger can be used at the right time, and provides extensive kernel awareness so customers can view and focus on the functionality provided by the RTOS. It's just that easy for TASKING's customers.

PPC CrossView Pro now provides significantly improved download speed, to increase the time available for productive debugging. TASKING has also added program counter trace capabilities for all PowerPC derivatives that support BDM/JTAG. To achieve this the TASKING v2.0 release supports the Macraigor Wiggler for the MPC8xx, MPC5xx, and the IBM40x. The Raven Wiggler for the PPC6xx, PPC7xx. The Hummingbird Wiggler for the MPC8xx, MPC5xx. This ensures program counter trace support for the largest number of Power PC families.

The TASKING PPC Solution is available now to run on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and Sun Solaris. The total package includes EDE, C/C++ Compiler toolset and the CrossView Pro Debugger. For more information visit our web site www.tasking.com/PPC.

TASKING is a developer and supplier of integrated software development tools for the embedded systems market and supports a wide range of CISC, RISC, microcontroller and DSP semiconductor technologies. Our knowledge of embedded systems results from the merger of three companies BSO, Intermetrics Microsystems and TASKING which are now embedded together to make our customers more successful. The three companies bring over 20 years of experience each, starting in 1974 with BSO pioneering the concept of cross development. Headquartered in Dedham, Mass., TASKING has offices worldwide, located in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Japan and UK.
