KB: Preventing Unapproved Manufacturers from Appearing in BOM Output

Altium Designer Altium Designer
This article explains how to control which manufacturer part choices appear in the Bill of Materials (BOM) export in Altium Designer. Components may contain multiple manufacturer part choices, but procurement requirements may dictate that only approved manufacturers are included in BOM output. Altium Designer does not provide a direct option to restrict specific manufacturers during BOM export. Instead, the ActiveBOM can be used to exclude unwanted part choices, prioritize approved manufacturers through solution ranking, and limit exported manufacturer information through column visibility settings. Using these controls helps reduce sourcing errors, supports procurement requirements, and avoids manual modification of exported BOM files.

Unwanted Manufacturers Appear in BOM Exports

Components may contain multiple manufacturer part choices. For some projects, specific manufacturers must be excluded due to procurement strategy, approved supplier requirements, supplier pricing considerations, or sourcing preferences. Manually removing unwanted manufacturers from exported BOM files can introduce errors and inconsistencies.

All Defined Part Choices Remain Available

Altium Designer does not provide a direct built-in setting to block specific manufacturer solutions during BOM export. All configured part choices remain available unless they are managed through ActiveBOM. Manufacturer visibility must therefore be controlled using exclusion status, solution ranking, and BOM column visibility settings.

Use the recommended workflow to control Manufacturers Using ActiveBOM Features:

  1. Exclude unwanted suppliers using Not Used.
  2. Prioritize approved suppliers using Solution Ranking.
  3. Export only the required supplier information using column visibility settings.

This workflow helps avoid manual editing and supports procurement-safe BOM exports.

Configure ActiveBOM Before Exporting the BOM

1. Exclude specific part choices using ActiveBOM.

  1. Open ActiveBOM.
Altium Designer Projects panel menu showing Add New to Project > ActiveBOM selected, with an ActiveBOM document open listing BOM items, revision states, lifecycle status, quantities, and manufacturer information.
  2. Select the component containing multiple part choices.
ActiveBOM workspace showing BOM line items with manufacturer lifecycle status, including Volume Production, Not Recommended for New Design, and Obsolete parts, plus supplier solutions, stock levels, and pricing for the selected capacitor.
  3. In the Solutions panel, under Manufacturer Part, locate the manufacturer to exclude.
  4. Click the drop down and select Not Used.
ActiveBOM panel showing a manufacturer part solution marked “Not Used,” demonstrating how to exclude the selected Texas Instruments MSP430F2132IPW part from the BOM solution list.
  5. Verify that the entry becomes greyed out and is excluded from the BOM document and BOM report export.
  6. To restore the manufacturer later, right-click the entry and select Use.

2. Prioritize approved manufacturers using solution ranking.

  1. Open ActiveBOM.
  2. Select a component with multiple manufacturer solutions.
  3. Open the Solutions panel.
  4. Adjust the ranking of each solution as required.
  5. Assign the highest ranks only to approved manufacturers.
    • Rank 1 = highest priority.
    • Rank 2 = secondary approved source.

3. Limit visible manufacturer information in the export.

  1. Open the Columns panel in ActiveBOM.
Properties panel for ActiveBOM document options, Columns tab selected, showing available BOM fields and visibility toggles used to show or hide columns in the BOM view.
  2. Disable manufacturer columns that should not be included in the export.
  3. Verify that visible columns match the approved manufacturer order and ranking.
  4. Export the BOM.
