KB: Migrating Component Templates from AES to Altium 365

Altium On-Prem Enterprise Server Altium On-Prem Enterprise Server
This article explains how to move component templates from an Altium On-Prem Enterprise Server (AES) workspace to an Altium 365 workspace. Because AES workspaces are typically hosted within a private network, Altium 365 cannot connect to them directly through Content Cart. As a result, component templates cannot be transferred in bulk and must be imported individually. If you are planning to migrate an entire workspace from AES to Altium 365, a workspace rehost can be requested to transfer the complete workspace from an AES backup and avoid manual template migration.

Solution Details

Unable to Transfer Existing Templates Automatically

You would like to move component templates from an Altium On-Prem Enterprise Server (AES) workspace to an Altium 365 workspace and need to know whether the templates can be migrated individually or in bulk.

Network Restrictions Prevent Direct Acquisition

Content Cart can only acquire data from workspaces that are accessible over the internet. Since AES workspaces are typically hosted in private LAN or WAN environments, Altium 365 cannot establish a connection to them. Because of this limitation, component templates cannot be transferred automatically or in bulk from AES to Altium 365.

Choose the Appropriate Migration Method

  • Import component templates individually into the Altium 365 workspace.
  • For a complete workspace migration, request a rehost of your AES workspace backup into Altium 365.

Import Templates into Altium 365

Manual Individual Template Import

  1. Download the required component template from the AES workspace.
  2. In your Altium 365 workspace, create a new component template.
  3. Open the newly created template for editing.
  4. Select File » Import » Component Template.
  5. Browse to the downloaded template file and import it.
  6. Repeat these steps for each component template that needs to be migrated.

Rehost Option for Full Workspace Migration

  1. Create or obtain a backup of the AES workspace.
  2. Contact Altium Support and request a workspace rehost to Altium 365.
  3. After the rehost is completed, verify that component templates and other workspace data have been migrated successfully.

Additional Notes

  • Content Cart only supports acquisitions when both the source and target workspaces are accessible over the internet.
  • Consider removing unused or obsolete component templates before migration to reduce effort.
  • Component templates support import and export on a per-template basis only.
