The Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) defines the leakage current resistance of printed circuit board (PCB) base material. The CTI is used to measure the electrical breakdown or tracking properties of an insulating material. Tracking is an electrical breakdown on the surface of an insulating material where an exposure to heat chars the material and the the char is more conductive than the original insulator, producing more current flow, more heat, and resulting in a “leak current”. This eventually leads to a short circuit, causing an error in the circuit.
