KB: 504 Gateway Time-out on live.altium.com after Okta sign-in

Altium Designer Altium Designer
Users may encounter a 504 Gateway Time‑out error when accessing https://live.altium.com after authenticating through Okta, while https://www.altium.com loads successfully. This issue is typically user‑specific and not caused by service outages, SSO configuration changes, or permission issues. The most common cause is stale or corrupted browser authentication data from a previous sign‑in session. Using an incognito/private browser window or clearing browser cookies forces a fresh authentication flow and resolves the issue

Solution Details

Time-out occurs after Okta redirect

When attempting to sign in to live.altium.com, the user is redirected through Okta authentication and then presented with a 504 Gateway Time‑out error page. The same user can access altium.com without issue. The problem does not reproduce when using an incognito or private browsing session, indicating the behavior is isolated to the browser’s stored session data.

Stale browser tokens disrupt authentication flow

live.altium.com relies on a multi‑step authentication process involving the browser, Okta, and backend identity services. If the browser contains outdated or partially corrupted cookies, tokens, or cached redirect information from a previous session, the authentication handshake may fail to complete. This causes the gateway to wait for an upstream response until it times out, resulting in a 504 error. This can occur without any configuration changes and may be triggered by interrupted sign‑ins, network changes, VPN usage, or proxy behavior.

Reset browser authentication state

Force a clean Okta sign‑in by resetting the browser authentication state.

  • Use an incognito or private browser window to bypass existing cookies and cached session data.
  • Clear browser cookies and cache for the affected domains before retrying.

Clear cookies or use private browsing

  1. Open an incognito or private browser window and sign in to https://live.altium.com, or
  2. Clear browser cookies and cache for:
    • altium.com
    • altiumlive.com
  3. Close all browser windows and retry signing in normally.

Additional Notes

  • This issue does not indicate an Okta outage or AltiumLive service issue.
  • No SSO or workspace configuration changes are required to trigger or resolve this behavior.
  • If incognito mode works, the root cause is confirmed as browser‑side authentication state.
  • Network elements such as proxies, VPNs, or interrupted sessions can contribute to the issue by leaving stale cookies or tokens in the browser.
  • Escalation is recommended only if the issue reproduces in incognito mode or affects multiple users.
