KB: How to Delete Component Types?

Solution Details

To delete Component Types, ensure no components are associated with them; otherwise, an error will occur, indicating that the Component Type cannot be deleted as it is used by revisions.

Here's the process for deleting Component Types:  

1. Use the  Components panel to locate all components that use the specific Component Type.  
2. Select components from the list and apply Edit..., Delete..., or Change Component Type... to these components so that they no longer reference the Component Type.
3. Once all associated components have been updated and the list is empty, you can remove the Component Type from Preferences » Data Management » Component Types.

Note:  The advantage of using the Components panel over the Explorer panel is that it offers a more streamlined and intuitive way to organize and interact with Component Types. This approach works for simple 1-to-1 associations, where all components of the same Component Type are in a single folder, and for more complex cases, such as components of the same Component Type distributed across multiple folders or components of different Component Types grouped in the same folder.
