Parent page: Schematic Commands

The following pre-packaged resources, derived from this base command, are available:

Applied Parameters: TemplateSource=Project

Summary

This command is not a command in the usual sense, but rather gives access to a sub-menu of currently available schematic templates for the active project. You can then change the template as required, from those available, and apply to the active schematic document, all schematics in the active project, or all open schematic documents (irrespective of the project to which they belong). A schematic template (*.SchDot) is a document that holds user-defined sheet size, border and title block descriptions, that can be referenced by (linked to) a schematic sheet, thereby negating the need to define these common attributes again and again.

Access

Project templates are available from the Design » Templates » Project Templates sub-menu.

The menu will only present templates that are currently available along the path specified in the Schematic Template Location field on the Options tab of the Project Options dialog. The path to templates also may be defined through the Manage Templates Folder commands available from the Design » Templates menu.
The menu will be disabled when you are signed into a managed content server and one or more Managed Schematic Templates have been shared with your User account  – see the Configuration Templates command on this page. Also, if an environment configuration is in force, the menu will be disabled when revisions of Schematic Template Items have been defined as part of that configuration.

Use

Choose the required template to use from those available on the sub-menu. The Update Template dialog will appear. Use this dialog to determine the scope of the update, both in terms of which schematic documents are to use this template, and how parametric information (typically defined in the template's title block region) is handled.

After clicking OK, the template will be applied to the schematic(s) and an information dialog will appear, summarizing how many documents have been set to the template. Project Template settings apply to, and are saved with, the current project.

Tips

  1. When applying the template to all schematic documents in the current project, all documents that are currently closed will be opened as the update is made.
  2. The schematic template currently being used by the active schematic document, can be seen in the Page Options section, on the General tab of the Properties panel, when no objects are currently selected in the design workspace.

Applied Parameters: TemplateSource=General

Summary

This command is not a command in the usual sense, but rather gives access to a sub-menu of currently available schematic templates – general templates that are part of the Altium NEXUS installation and therefore are available to all projects. You can then change the template as required from those available and apply to the active schematic document all schematics in the active project, or all open schematic documents (regardless of the project to which they belong). A schematic template (*.SchDot) is a document that holds user-defined sheet size, border, and title block descriptions that can be referenced by (linked to) a schematic sheet, and therefore negating the need to define these common attributes again and again.

Access

General templates are available from the Design » Templates » General Templates sub-menu.

The menu will only present templates that are currently available along the path specified in the Template location field on the Data Management – Templates page of the Preferences dialog. For a default installation of the software, this location will be: \Users\Public\Documents\Altium\<AD Version>\Templates.

Use this dialog to determine the scope of the update, both in terms of which schematic documents are to use this template and how parametric information (typically defined in the template's title block region) is handled.

After clicking OK, the template will be applied to the schematic(s) and an information dialog will appear, summarizing how many documents have been set to the template.

Tips

  1. When applying the template to all schematic documents in the current project, all documents that are currently closed will be opened as the update is made.
  2. The schematic template currently being used by the active schematic document, can be seen in the Page Options section, on the General tab of the Properties panel, when no objects are currently selected in the design workspace.
  3. You can define the default template to be used when creating new schematic documents in a project using the Template field, on the Schematic – General page of the Preferences dialog.

Applied Parameters: TemplateSource=Configuration

Summary

This command is not a command in the usual sense, but rather gives access to a sub-menu of currently available vault-based schematic templates – templates that have been released into a managed content server and have been made available for reuse as part of an enforced environment configuration (chosen by the user when signing in to the organization's managed content server). You can then change the template as required from those available and apply to either the active schematic document, all schematics in the active project, or all open schematic documents (regardless of the project to which they belong). A schematic template is a document that holds user-defined sheet size, border, and title block descriptions that can be referenced by (linked to) a schematic sheet, and therefore, negating the need to define these common attributes again and again.

The menu will be available when you are signed into a Managed Content Server and one or more Managed Schematic Templates are shared with your server User account. If an environment configuration is in force, the menu will be available when revisions of Schematic Template Items have been defined as part of that configuration.

Access

Server-based Managed Schematic Templates are available from the Design » Templates » Configuration Templates sub-menu.

Once you have signed in to your organization's managed content server and chosen (if applicable) from the selection of environment configurations available to you, the NEXUS design client will be configured with respect to use of Schematic Templates. The menu will only present those Schematic Templates available, or defined for the environment configuration currently in-force.

Use

Choose the required Schematic Template Item to use, from those available on the sub-menu. The Update Template dialog will appear. Use this dialog to determine the scope of the update both in terms of which schematic documents are to use this template Item and how parametric information (typically defined in the template's title block region) is handled.

After clicking OK, the template will be applied to the schematic(s) and an information dialog will appear summarizing on how many documents the template has been set.

Tips

  1. When applying the template Item to all schematic documents in the current project, all documents that are currently closed will be opened as the update is made.
  2. The schematic template currently being used by the active schematic document, can be seen in the Page Options section, on the General tab of the Properties panel, when no objects are currently selected in the design workspace.

Applied Parameters: None

Summary

This command is used to quickly browse to and open a different schematic template file that is stored in a place other than the location specified for the General or Project templates. You can then apply the chosen template to either the active schematic document, all schematics in the active project, or all open schematic documents (regardless of the project to which they belong). A schematic template is a document that holds user-defined sheet size, border, and title block descriptions that can be referenced by (linked to) a schematic sheet, and therefore negating the need to define these common attributes again and again.

Access

This command can be accessed from the Schematic Editor by:

  • Choosing the Design » Templates » Project Templates » Choose a File command from the main menus.
  • Choosing the Design » Templates » General Templates » Choose Another File command from the main menus.

Use

After launching the command, a standard Open dialog will appear. Use this to browse to and open the required schematic template file (can be *.SchDot or *.SchDoc format). After clicking Open, the Update Template dialog will appear. Use this dialog to determine the scope of the update, both in terms of which schematic documents are to use this template, and how parametric information (typically defined in the template's title block region) is handled.

After clicking OK, the template will be applied to the schematic(s) and an information dialog will appear, summarizing on how many documents the template has been set.

Tips

  1. When applying the template to all schematic documents in the current project, all documents that are currently closed will be opened as the update is made.
  2. The schematic template currently being used by the active schematic document, can be seen in the Page Options section, on the General tab of the Properties panel, when no objects are currently selected in the design workspace.

Applied Parameters: Action=ChooseTemplatesFolder

Summary

This command is used to access the relevant dialog, with which to define the path to the Project, or General schematic templates. • Choosing the Design » Templates » Project Templates » Manage Project Template Folder command from the main menus.
  • Choosing the Design » Templates » General Templates » Manage General Template Folder command, from the main menus.

Use

While a single command, its use depends on how it is accessed:

  • From Project Templates sub-menu – accesses the Options tab of the Project Options dialog. Specify the path to the project templates using the Schematic Template Location field.
  • From General Templates sub-menu – accesses the Data Management – Templates page of the Preferences dialog. Specify the path to the general templates using the Template location field. For a default installation of the software, this location will be: \Users\Public\Documents\Altium\<AD Version>\Templates.
