Agentic Requirements Engineering

AI agents provide substantial advantages for engineering tasks like requirements capturing and test planning by significantly enhancing efficiency and automating complex, repetitive workflows. Requirements Portal's Engineering Assistant leverages AI technologies to provide you with fast, automated review tool for your requirements projects that allows you to ask questions about requirements and verification activities in your current project in free-form, natural language and get quick answers without manually filtering or searching, for example:

  • How many requirements are not verified?

  • Are there any engineering gaps in these requirements?

  • Show me all requirements about the power supply.

  • Which requirements need to be taken into account for PCB design?

  • Do any requirements conflict with each other?

  • Give me an overview of all battery-related requirements.

  • Are software requirements properly covered by test steps?

The Engineering Assistant is also able to modify, create, or delete items related to requirements and verification activities. When you submit a request to create a new or change or delete an existing item, the Engineering Assistant will provide you a summary of changes to be applied, and you can review them and then either apply or discard the changes. Examples of such requests:

  • Generate requirements for a lightweight drone power supply that takes a 6S LiPo input, provides regulated 5 V / 5 A and 12 V / 3 A outputs, and weighs under 150 g. It should handle vibration and -10°C to +50°C operation, with protection for short circuit, reverse polarity, overtemperature, and low battery.

  • Change the required maximum operating temperature for all parts to 60°C.

  • Can you identify all requirements that affect the sizing of the power system and ensure they are verifiable?

  • In the new design, I've replaced the camera with an IR sensor. Remove all requirements that were related to the camera.

  • Suggest a verification plan for drone flight requirements.

The Engineering Assistant is enabled by default. If required, it can be disabled by a Workspace administrator using the External Provider option on the AI Settings – General page of the Settings (accessed by clicking the  icon at the top right, selecting Settings from the menu that appears, and then selecting General in the AI Settings group from list in the left-hand pane) – .

The Engineering Assistant is accessed via the Engineering Assistant pane available in the Requirement Module and Verification & Validation Module by clicking the  icon at the top right.

You can see the current chat context by clicking the  button at the bottom of the Engineering Assistant pane. The Chat Context pop-up will open presenting the following information:

  • Project – shows the name of the current project and the name of the currently selected folder, specification, section, or V&V activity.

  • Filters – shows the number of filters currently applied to the requirements table and the list of columns to which the filters are applied.

  • Rows selected – shows the number of currently selected requirement rows.

Click the  button to open the Chat Context pop-up. In this example, the Project region shows the name of the current project (Drone_Example_Project) and the name of the currently selected specification (Drone_Requirements).

The Filters region shows the number of currently applied filters (2) and the list of columns to which the filters are applied (V&V Status and V&V Methods).

The Filters region shows the number of the currently selected specifications (3).

When in the Verification & Validation Module, the Project region of the Chat Context pop-up shows the name of the currently selected activity (as shown in the example above) or folder.

To use the Engineering Assistant, type your query into the Ask anything field at the bottom of the Engineering Assistant pane and click the  icon or press Enter. The Engineering Assistant will analyze the project and present a relevant answer in the pane. Depending on the query, the Engineering Assistant will return a numeric answer, a list of requirement IDs, or a brief summary. The item(s) related to the query will be highlighted in the project view (e.g., in the requirements table or activities table), and the number of related items is shown in the project tree next to the corresponding entries (specifications, sections, and folders).

  • You can copy your previously sent request or a response from the Engineering Assistant. Click the  button in under a request or response to copy its content to the clipboard.

  • You can scroll through previously sent prompts by using the Arrow Up and Arrow Down keys when the cursor is inside the text field.

  • You can express your satisfaction with responses from Engineering Assistant. Use the  and  icons below a response in the Engineering Assistant pane to provide your positive or negative reaction to it.

When you submit a request to the Engineering Assistant to create a new or change or delete an existing item, suggested changes will be shown in a dedicated tile within the Engineering Assistant pane where you can review them (by expanding the Changes summary collapsible region) and then either apply or discard the changes. Also, suggested changes will be visible in the project view (e.g., the requirements table) as follows:

  • New items are highlighted in green, with the icon in the  icon in the Identifier column. A green bubble is also shown next to the corresponding entry in the project tree at the left.

  • Changed items are highlighted in purple, with the  icon in the Identifier column. Actual changes are highlighted in the table. A purple bubble is also shown next to the corresponding entry in the project tree at the left.

  • Items suggested for removal are highlighted in red, with the  icon in the Identifier column. A red bubble is also shown next to the corresponding entry in the project tree at the left.

In the Verification & Validation Module, the Requirement Statuses and Procedure tabs of an activity also show the number of affected items within them and highlight the affected items ().

  • V&V Status / Manual V&V Status are not editable by the Engineering Assistant (they are derived from V&V Activities).

  • Compliance status/level (the actual compliance value) is lookup-only: you can set it, but only to an already-existing compliance value (it will not auto-create new ones).

  • Fields like Owner, Applicability, custom properties, and images are not currently supported by the Engineering Assistant.

  • The Engineering Assistant supports multi-turn dialog within a session, i.e., it remembers the context of the current conversation for relevant follow-up queries. For example, if the Engineering Assistant has listed several requirements in response to a query and you then ask How many of those are high priority?, the assistant understands that those refers to the previously listed requirements and answers accordingly. That way, you can keep a 'conversation' by further refining or drilling down into the information without restating context.

  • The Engineering Assistant can also add, move, rename, and remove folders, specifications, and sections within the Requirements tree and folders, methods, and activities in the Verification & Validation tree. In this case, the changes will be highlighted in the tree (, , ).

  • The Engineering Assistant supports linking V&V activities to requirements and step procedures.

  • At the initial access to the Engineering Assistant pane (or after starting a new conversation), several query examples will be presented in the pane (). If the currently selected specification contains no requirements or the project does not include verification activities, you will be suggested to create requirements / verification plan first (). Click the corresponding button to apply the corresponding action.

  • Predefined actions are available in the Assistant sub-menu of the actions menu () of selected requirement(s). Select the Improve Requirement or Breakdown Requirement action in the sub-menu to open the Engineering Assistant pane with a corresponding prompt ().

  • When viewing a specification with no requirements in it, clicking the Generate button to opens the Engineering Assistant pane with a prompt to guide you through the process of defining requirements ().

  • Searching within a specific folder is available.

  • When the Engineering Assistant service cannot be reached or produces any error, an error indicating the failure will be displayed in the pane. Click the Retry button to retry the last failed request.

  • To clear the current conversation and start a new one, click the  icon at the bottom of the Engineering Assistant pane. Note that only one conversation at the time is available (i.e., there is no history of conversations).

Using and Managing AI Skills

A skill is a reusable instruction set that the Engineering Assistant can execute in to perform a specific task more consistently. A skill packages how a specific engineering task should be done – the intent, the boundaries, the inputs it needs, the steps to follow – so that the same outcome is produced consistently, regardless of who runs it or when and without each user having to explain the same instructions every time.

A skill can be treated as:

  • A repeatable engineering workflow

  • An organizational standard made executable

  • A way to package expertise and make it reusable

Skills are invoked automatically by the AI which selects and applies them automatically based on your intent. You do not need to memorize commands or manually select skills. When you send a message, the Engineering Assistant:

  1. Analyzes your intent and current context.

  2. Reviews the skills available in the Workspace.

  3. Compares your request against each skill's Short Description to determine which skills are relevant.

  4. Selects the best matching skill.

  5. Follows the skill's Instructions to perform the task.

  6. Returns the result for you to review.

For example, when you send Rewrite these requirements using our company writing standard, the Engineering Assistant detects the intent (requirement standardization), identifies the skill whose short description best matches that request, executes the instructions defined in that skill, and returns the improved requirements.

  • When the Engineering Assistant processes your request based on a skill, the used skill will be shown in the Check what I looked for collapsible region in the Engineering Assistant pane. Click the link to open the AI Skills window with the corresponding skill highlighted.

  • When required, a skill can take actions across different modules of Requirements Portal. For example, a default Create Verification Plan skill will not only suggest suitable verification methods and activities (in the Verification & Validation module) but also suggest linking them to corresponding requirements (in the Requirements module).

A use example of the Create Verification Plan skill for requirements in a specification. On the first stage, the required V&V methods are generated and linked to suitable requirements.

On the second stage, V&V activities are generated to cover the scoped requirements.

On the third stage, verification steps are generated and linked to suitable requirements.

A set of available skills is managed using the AI Skills window accessed by clicking the  button at the top right of the Engineering Assistant pane. From this window, you can add new and change and delete existing skills.

  • Existing skills are listed in the left-hand side Workspace Skills region of the window. Click an entry to show the selected skill's details.

  • To add a new skill, click the  button at the bottom left of the window. An entry for a new skill will appear in the list. Define Name, Short Description, and Instructions for a new skill and then click the button at the bottom right.

Refer to the Best Practices for Formulating a Skill collapsible section below for details about each field.

  • To edit an existing skill, select it in the list, change its fields as required, and then click the  button at the bottom right.

  • To delete an existing skill, select it in the list, click the  button at the bottom right, and then confirm the deletion.

Skills can also be managed on the AI Settings – Skills page of the Settings (accessed by clicking the  icon at the top right, selecting Settings from the menu that appears, and then selecting Skill in the AI Settings group from list in the left-hand pane).
