The following pre-packaged resources, derived from this base command, are available:

Applied Parameters: ClipboardMode=ClipboardRing

Summary

This command is used to copy the selected object(s) from the current document to the clipboard.

Access

This command can be accessed from the PCB Editor, PCB Library Editor, and Pad Via Library Editor by:

  • Choosing the Edit » Copy command from the main menus.
  • Clicking the  button on the PCB Standard toolbar (PCB Editor), the PCB Lib Standard toolbar (PCB Library Editor), or the Pad Via Library Standard toolbar (Pad Via Library Editor).
  • Using the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut.
  • Right-clicking over the selected object then choosing the Copy command from the context menu.

Use

The functionality of the command differs slightly depending on the document or viewing mode in which it is used:

  • In a PCB/PCB Library document - usage depends on the layout mode:
    • 2D Layout Mode - first, ensure that the object(s) that you want to copy is/are selected in the main design workspace. After launching the command, the cursor will change to a cross-hair and you will be prompted to select a reference point. This is a coordinate relative to the selected object(s) and is used to accurately position the selection when using the Paste command. Position the cursor as required then click or press Enter; the selection will be copied to the clipboard.
    • 3D Layout Mode - the current view in the main design workspace will be copied to the clipboard in bitmap format. You have control over the resolution of the copied image via the 3D Snapshot Resolution dialog that subsequently opens.
  • In a Pad Via Library document - select the text to be copied then launch the command. The text will be copied to the clipboard.

Applied Parameters: ClipboardMode=ClipboardRing|Action=CopyAsText

Summary

This command is used to copy the currently selected design object(s) to the clipboard in textual format. This information can then be pasted into any text field or external text document.

Access

This command is accessed from the PCB Editor and the PCB Library Editor by choosing the Edit » Copy As Text command from the main menus.

Use

First, ensure that the object(s) that you want to copy is/are selected in the main design workspace.

After launching the command, the cursor will change to a cross-hair and you will be prompted to select a reference point. This is a coordinate relative to the selected object(s) and is used to accurately position the selection when using the Paste command. Position the cursor as required then click or press Enter; the selection will be copied to the clipboard.

The details copied to the clipboard include:

  • The type of object it is.
  • The designator and comment (for a component object).
  • The object's location in the workspace.
  • The layer upon which the object resides (or start and stop layers for a via).

An example of a component copied as text to the clipboard is:

Component Y1-25MHz (100.6mm,1.5mm) on Top Layer

An example of a track and via copied as text to the clipboard is:

Track (20mm,6mm)(80mm,6mm)  Top Layer
Via (45mm,6mm) Top Layer to Bottom Layer

Applied Parameters: Action=RoomFormat

Summary

This command is used to copy the formatting of a selected source room to destination rooms that contain an identical set of components. The command is particularly useful when you need to copy the placement and routing of a particular channel to all other channels in a multi-channel design.

Access

This command is accessed from the PCB Editor by choosing the Design » Rooms » Copy Room Formats command from the main menus.

Use

After launching the command, the cursor will change to a cross-hair and you will be prompted to choose the source room. The procedure to copy room formatting is as follows:

  1. Position the cursor over the room from which you want to copy the formatting then click or press Enter.
  2. You will then be prompted to choose a destination room. Position the cursor over the room to which you want to copy the formatting then click or press Enter.
  3. The Confirm Channel Format Copy dialog will open. Use this dialog to define the copy options as required. The options relate to component placement, designator and comment formatting, net routing, and room size/shape. There is also an option to limit the copy to only those objects that are selected in the source room.
  4. After defining the criteria for the copy as required, click OK to proceed with the copy. An information dialog will appear that lists how many components were updated and in how many rooms.

Tips

  1. If the source and destination rooms that you initially select are members of two different channel classes, an error dialog will appear alerting you to this fact. You will not be able to copy the formatting of the source room to this particular destination room and will have to choose another destination room that is a member of the same channel class.
